Nearly 1.85 million domestic and international tourists converged on Siem Reap province during the three-day Khmer New Year celebrations from April 14-16, underscoring the province’s enduring appeal as Cambodia’s premier holiday destination.

According to the Provincial Tourism Department, a total of 1,842,438 visitors participated in this year’s festivities. The overwhelming majority – approximately 1,837,000 – were local residents and domestic tourists, while international arrivals reached 5,438.

At the heart of the surge was the world-renowned Angkor Archaeological Park, which remained the principal attraction. Visitors reported high levels of satisfaction, describing the ancient temple complex as a leading global destination for major holidays, including Khmer New Year, Pchum Ben, and year-end celebrations.

Despite global economic headwinds, including rising fuel costs and regional border sensitivities, tourists commended the province’s stable security environment. Many also highlighted the effective site management at Angkor – particularly its emphasis on public order, environmental cleanliness, and well-maintained green spaces – which helped elevate the visitor experience even amid peak summer heat.

“The soaring temperatures could not dampen the festive spirit,” the report noted, emphasising that the architectural legacy of the Khmer civilisation continues to serve as a powerful magnet for travellers from around the world.

Beyond the temples, provincial authorities, in collaboration with the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, organised a wide array of cultural activities across Siem Reap city. Highlights included traditional boat races, dragon boat competitions, and leisure river cruises – offering visitors a more diverse and immersive holiday experience during the record-breaking celebrations.
